George H. Kirby
President, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director
George H. Kirby joined Ocean Power Technologies in January 2015 as President, Chief Executive Officer and Board Director, bringing more than 20 years of international technical, commercial and operational experience in the global power and infrastructure sectors. Prior to joining OPT, Mr. Kirby was most recently Senior Vice President for the energy business unit at AECOM Technology Corporation, where he and his team provided full power generation and power delivery project life-cycle services in the US energy market. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Utility Services at SAIC Energy, Environment & Infrastructure working with electric utilities in the North American market. Mr. Kirby also held a variety of management positions at American Superconductor, GE Energy Financial Services, and GE Power & Water.
Mr. Kirby holds a Bachelors degree in aerospace engineering from Syracuse University and an MBA from Pennsylvania State University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, and he holds several patents in power generation technology.
Matthew T. Shafer
Chief Financial Officer, Vice President of Finance, and Treasurer
Matthew T. Shafer is the Chief Financial Officer, Vice President of Finance, and Treasurer of the Company. Matt has over 20 years of global experiences in commercial operations, financial and regulatory reporting, debt and equity offerings, financial planning & analysis, mergers and acquisitions, ERP systems implementations, internal controls, and leading the full controllership aspects of finance at organizations in the industrial, commercial, and pharmaceutical industries. He joined OPT from CMF Associates, a nation-wide practice specializing in providing finance and operations solutions for significantly improved financial results at small to middle market rapidly growing companies mainly in the manufacturing, energy, and healthcare industries, where he served as Vice President of Finance and Corporate Controller leading high-performing finance teams. Prior to this, he served in primary responsibility as a Business Unit CFO at Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, a large global publicly traded company that develops, manufactures, markets and distributes specialty pharmaceuticals and medical devices, where he was instrumental in leading finance teams for its Dentistry, Neurology and Generics portfolio business units, and working closely with commercial operations and corporate level teams on numerous product launches, sales force expansions, internal controls, financial systems integrations, business acquisitions and commercial contracts.
Matt has a foundation in Public Accounting working at Arthur Andersen LLP and extensive manufacturing, commercial, and industrial U.S. domestic and international finance and operations public company leadership experiences earlier in his career while at Tyco International, Catalent Phama Solutions, and US Industries Inc. He is a Certified Public Accountant, has an MBA in Finance from Rutgers Business School, and a Bachelor degree from The Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University.
Christopher A. Phebus
Vice President of Engineering
Christopher A. Phebus joined Ocean Power Technologies in 2018 as Vice President of Engineering. Mr. Phebus brings over 15 years of leadership in the aviation, power, and oil & gas markets. Prior to joining OPT, Mr. Phebus served the General Electric Company for 16 years in positions of increasing responsibility. His accomplishments include leading the engineering teams to deliver multiple projects valued at more than $5B and delivering next generation products as the GM and Executive Engineering Director for GE Subsea Products and Projects. As the GM and Executive Lean-Six Sigma Quality Leader for Global Engineering at GE Energy, Christopher established and implemented continuous improvements across the global engineering organization resulting in more than $30M in savings and improved customer satisfaction. Most recently he was the Head of Global Engineering and Technology for the Flow and Process Technology and Reciprocating Compression division at GE Oil & Gas. He began his career at Pratt & Whitney, where he worked as a systems engineer directly with the U.S. Air Force on the F100 aircraft engine.
Mr. Phebus holds a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and a Masters of Science in Management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Matthew J. May
Vice President of Global Business Development
Matthew J. May joined Ocean Power Technologies in May of 2018 as Vice President Global Business Development. Matt brings extensive experience and leadership to OPT in the areas of sales strategy, business planning, account management, and strategic partnerships. Over his 30-year career, Matt has led and developed teams to overcome the most challenging missions and corporate hurdles.
Prior to joining OPT, Matt was Director of Sales and Marketing for Tampnet, a leading telecommunications company that provides high speed wireless communications to the offshore oil and gas industry. Prior to Tampnet, Matt served as the first Executive Director for NextOpVets, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in Houston, TX with the mission of connecting veterans and military talent to over 100 companies in the energy sector and beyond. To date, NextOpVets has placed over 1,500 veterans with corporate partners.
Matt served for over twenty-five years as a US Navy SEAL, where he held multiple leadership roles in operational units based in Europe, Middle East and South America. Matt completed his undergraduate studies while serving out his last few years on active duty, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Saint Leo University and receiving a degree in Business Administration with a Specialization in Management.
